Sernograd ( Russian Зерноград ) is a city in Rostov Oblast ( Russia ) with 26,842 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the northern foothills of the Caucasus, about 70 km southeast of the oblast capital Rostov-on-Don, not far from the headwaters of the Kagalnik near the mouth of the Don, which also flows into the Sea of ​​Azov .

Sernograd is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

The city lies on the 1915 railway line (Rostov–) Bataisk - Salsk .

history

The place was created in connection with the construction of the Rostov – Salsk railway (station Torgowaja ) in 1915 as Werbljud station (Russian for camel ).

In 1929 a larger grain breeding and research institute was set up here; In 1933 the growing place received the status of an urban-type settlement under the name Sernowoi (from Russian serno for grain ).

1951 was granted city rights. In 1960 the city was given its current name.

In Sernograd there are factories for hydraulic power units and for agricultural machinery as well as operations for the food industry. The city is the center of an important agricultural area (grain, sunflowers, cattle and horse breeding).
