Millerowo ( Russian Миллерово ) is a city in Rostov Oblast ( Russia ) with 36,499 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 220 km north of the oblast capital Rostov-on-Don on the upper reaches of the Glubokaya , a left tributary of the Seversky Donets .
Millerowo is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
The city lies on the railway line Moscow - Voronezh - Rostov-on-Don (route km 966), from which a line branches off in the direction of Luhansk and Donets Basin ( Ukraine ). The M4 Moscow – Rostov-on-Don – Novorossiysk highway runs through Millerowo .
history
Millerowo was created in 1786 when Tsarina Catherine the Great, in an ukase, allowed the German-born Cossack officer Ivan Abramowitsch Miller (Müller) to build an estate on previously unused land. The manor and settlement were called Millerowo.
Towards the end of the 19th century, with the construction of the Rostov-Voronezh- Koslower railway and a branch line towards the Donets Basin, the place developed into an important railway junction.
In 1926 city rights were granted.
During the Second World War , Millerowo was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on July 16, 1942 and recaptured on January 17, 1943 by troops of the Southwest Front of the Red Army while advancing on Voroshilovgrad .

economy
In Millerowo there is a plant for agricultural machines and other machine factories, as well as companies in the textile and food industries. To the northwest of the city is an airfield of the Russian Air Force.
