Course of the Manych (Маныч) in the south of the Don catchment area |
The Manych ( Russian Маныч , Западный Маныч (Western Manych)) is a river in southern Russia .
It flows through the marshy Manytn lowlands named after him , which is often viewed as the border of Europe , and flows into the Don at Manychskaya .
This only applies to the Western Manych : The shorter Eastern Manych , which is created by a bifurcation of the Kalaus source river , only carried water after heavy rainfall in the Caucasus and then flowed towards the Caspian Sea without reaching it in the historically documented period (above ground). The tributary of the Kalau to the Eastern Manych has been interrupted by a dam since the 1970s; the water flow of the river, which is now only fed by other tributaries and canals, such as the Terek - Kuma -Manytsch Canal , is regulated by a dam.
Before the construction of reservoirs (such as the Proletarsk reservoir, including the natural Lake Manych-Gudilo and Vessjoly reservoir) and the regulation of the Don by the 2700 km² Zimlyansk reservoir , the western Manych changed its course several times during a year; When the Don was flooded, water pushed up to 100 kilometers into the Western Manych.
