The Canton Pontchâteau (Breton Canton Pontkastell-Keren ) is a French canton in the arrondissement Châteaubriant-Ancenis and Saint-Nazaire , in the Loire-Atlantique and the region Pays de la Loire ; its capital is Pontchâteau .

history

The canton was founded in 1790. From 1790 to 2015 six municipalities belonged to the canton of Pontchâteau. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of municipalities rose to 13 in 2015. From the previous six municipalities, Besné moved to the canton of Saint-Nazaire-2 and Saint-Joachim to the canton of Guérande . All the communes of the previous cantons of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois and Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon were added to the four remaining communes .

The old canton of Pontchâteau comprised six municipalities on an area of ​​231.12 km². These were: Besné , Crossac , Pontchâteau (main town), Sainte-Anne-sur-Brivet , Sainte-Reine-de-Bretagne and Saint-Joachim . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 4431.

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the four voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Danielle Cornet (DVG) / Bernard Lebeau (PS) won against Bernard Clouet / Dominique Fraslin (both Union de la Droite) with 54.61% of the votes (turnout: 48.56%) ).
