Besné ( Breton : Gwennenid ) is a French municipality with 3051 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Nazaire and the canton of Saint-Nazaire-2 . The inhabitants are called Besnéens .

Besné is located on the Brivet about 21 kilometers northeast of Saint-Nazaire . The Canal de la Trallée runs along the south of the municipality . Besné is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Pontchâteau in the north, Prinquiau in the east and south-east, Donges in the south and Crossac in the west.

In the west is the moorland of the Brière.
