Chaumes-en-Retz ( Breton : Kalavad-Raez ) is a French municipality with 6759 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Nazaire and is part of the cantons of Machecoul and canton of Pornic . The inhabitants are called Calmetiens .
The municipality was created with effect from January 1, 2016 as Commune nouvelle from the merger of the former municipalities of Arthon-en-Retz and Chéméré .
geography
Chaumes-en-Retz is located about 29 kilometers west-southwest of Nantes on the border with the Pays Nantais near the Atlantic coast . Chaumes-en-Retz is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Frossay and Vue in the north, Rouans in the north and east, Saint-Hilaire-de-Chaléons in the south and south-east, Pornic in the south and south-west, Chauvé in the west and Saint-Viaud in the north-west.
