Aaron Dell (born May 4, 1989 in Airdrie , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League since March 2015 and has been playing for their farm teams in the minor leagues since October 2014 .

Career

Dell played for the Calgary Canucks in the Alberta Junior Hockey League between 2007 and 2009 during his junior years . He then spent three years at the University of North Dakota , where he played for the university's ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With the team he won the championship of the WCHA in the three following years and was decorated with numerous personal awards. With 30 victories in the 2010/11 season, he broke the school record previously held by Ed Belfour with 29 victories.

Nevertheless, the goalkeeper switched to the professional field undrafted for the 2012/13 season and joined the Allen Americans from the Central Hockey League . With these he won the Ray Miron President's Cup at the end of the season and was again awarded numerous awards as the best goalkeeper in the league. For the 2013/14 season he moved to the Utah Grizzlies . Dell confirmed its achievements there and was tested on loan by numerous franchises of the American Hockey League during the season. Only in the Abbotsford Heat did he come to six appearances in March 2014. The Grizzlies therefore extended his contract prematurely in July 2015 and let him participate in the training camp of the Worcester Sharks from the AHL. In October 2015 he finally returned by transfer to the Allen Americans, who had meanwhile also moved to the ECHL . Via the Americans, the goalkeeper quickly earned a place in the Worcester Sharks squad, where he shared the post with Troy Grosenick . Towards the end of the 2014/15 season , the San Jose Sharks finally submitted to him a new contract valid for the National Hockey League . They extended this by two years in July 2016 after Dell had established itself as the goalkeeper in the goal of the San Jose Barracuda - the new farm team of the San Jose Sharks - in the 2015/16 season .

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Dell rose to Martin Jones' substitute goalkeeper in the NHL roster of the San Jose Sharks and made 20 appearances this season.
