Marc-Édouard Vlasic ( Croatian Marc-Édouard Vlašić ; born March 30, 1987 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player of Croatian descent who has played for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League on the position of defender since October 2006 . With the Canadian national team , he won gold medals at the 2014 Winter Olympics and at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .

Career

Vlasic began his junior career in 2003 with the Remparts de Québec in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League . After a mixed rookie year and a slightly stronger second year, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2005 in the second round in 35th place by the San Jose Sharks . The following year followed Vlasic's best season in the Remparts jersey. With 73 points in 66 games, he played an excellent season, which was rewarded with a move into the playoffs. Finally, the Québec City team won the Memorial Cup final as hosts , where Vlasic scored the decisive goal to win the final, and he was the defender with the most points in the playoffs.

At the training camp of the San Jose Sharks in the summer of 2006, Vlasic convinced and won a place in the team's squad. With over 20 minutes of ice time per game, most for a rookie in the 2006/07 season , he established himself in his first NHL season and was named the best rookie player of the San Jose Sharks at the end of the season and was also named the NHL All-Rookie Team elected. In the following season, Vlasic improved his game on the defensive significantly and was one of the most consistent defenders in the squad. However, he was not able to develop on the offensive, which his only 14 scorer points showed. This changed in the 2008/09 season when, under the new coach Todd McLellan, the defenders were more involved in the offensive. Vlasic set new records in the categories of goals, assists and points at the end of the season at the side of defensive partner Rob Blake . With his 36 scorer points, he improved significantly compared to the previous year and his 30th assist in the last game of the regular season meant that the Sharks - Dan Boyle , Rob Blake, Christian Ehrhoff and himself - put four defenders with 30 or more goal preparations . Only three other teams in NHL history had done this before.

In July 2017, Vlasic signed a new contract in San Jose that should earn him a total salary of $ 56 million over the next eight years starting with the 2018/19 season. In December 2019, he played his 1,000th regular season game in the NHL.

International

On the international stage, Vlasic played for the first time at the 2009 World Cup in Switzerland for the national team of Canada , when he was nominated after the elimination of the San Jose Sharks from the playoffs of the National Hockey League at the beginning of the intermediate round of the tournament. He played a total of five matches and was able to win the silver medal after a final defeat against the reigning world champion Russia . In 2014 he became Olympic champion with the Canadian national team. He also represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 and won the gold medal there with the team. This was followed by winning the silver medal at the 2017 World Cup .
