Martin Jones (born January 10, 1990 in North Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since June 2015 . Previously, he was active in the organization of the Los Angeles Kings for five years and won the Stanley Cup with the team in the 2014 playoffs . With the Canadian national team , he became world champion in 2015 .
Career
Jones first played in his hometown with Vancouver Northwest Giants in a lower class junior league. About the WHL Bantam Draft acquired the Calgary Hitmen from the junior league Western Hockey League for the 2006/07 season . There he was the substitute goalkeeper for two seasons. In the summer of 2008, the Canadian took part in a training camp for the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League and was able to draw attention to himself there with good performances, so that the Kings equipped the previously undrafted goalkeeper with a three-year contract. The following season 2008/09 , however, Jones initially continued to spend with the Hitmen and was used there as a goalkeeper. With 45 wins from 55 games within one season, the left catcher set a new club record and was therefore also in first place in the league. Furthermore, he led the statistics for most games without conceding a goal (7) and took second place with an average goal conceded of 2.08 goals per game. In the play-offs, Jones equalized with twelve consecutive wins with the Hitmen a league record and led the team to the finals, where they lost to the Kelowna Rockets . In the following season, the Canadian drew attention to himself with outstanding performances, so he led the goalkeeping statistics of the league with an average of 2.21 goals per game and was consequently awarded the Del Wilson Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the WHL. In addition, the Hitmen won the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the championship trophy of the WHL, for the first time since 1999 .
For the 2010/11 season , the Kings appointed him to the roster of their farm team Manchester Monarchs , for which Jones was henceforth on the ice in the second-rate American Hockey League . After his contract was extended by two years in the summer of 2013, the Canadian was in the Kings' NHL squad for the first time in November 2013 due to the injury of the goalkeeper Jonathan Quick . A month later he made his debut in the top division of North America in a 3-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks and held each of the opposing nine penalties in the shootout . In his following two missions for the Kings Jones remained clean and was the first rookie in the Kings jersey since Gerry Desjardins in the 1968/69 season , which succeeded. After the Kings transferred their actual substitute goalkeeper Ben Scrivens to the Edmonton Oilers in February 2014 , Jones became an integral part of the NHL squad and henceforth formed the goalkeeper duo together with Quick.
In the run-up to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , Jones, Colin Miller and the Kings' first-round suffrage was given to the Boston Bruins , who in return transferred Milan Lucic to Los Angeles. The Bruins, in turn, transferred Jones a few days later to the San Jose Sharks , who in turn gave the Bruins a first-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and the NHL rights to Sean Kuraly . At the San Jose Sharks, the Canadian filled the gap left by the departure of Antti Niemi . With his performances, Jones led the team in the course of the 2015/16 season to the final of the Stanley Cup , where the Sharks were subject to the Pittsburgh Penguins .
In July 2017, Jones signed a new contract in San Jose that should earn him a total salary of $ 34.5 million over the next six years starting with the 2018/19 season.
International
At the end of the calendar year 2009 Jones was in the squad of the Canadian U20 national team for the U20 Junior World Championship and was there substitute goalkeeper behind Jake Allen . The Canadian U20 selection won the silver medal at the end of the tournament, with Jones playing for the gold medal in a preliminary round and in the final.
In spring 2015, Jones represented Canada's senior national team for the first time at the World Cup in the Czech Republic and won the gold medal there.
