Radim Šimek (born September 20, 1992 in Mladá Boleslav , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since May 2017 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
Šimek comes from the youth department of HC Benátky nad Jizerou , for which the defender was active until the start of the 2009/10 season up to the U20 team. From there he moved to the offspring of HC Liberec , whose professional team played under the name Bílí Tygři Liberec in the Extra League. Šimek was first in the squad of the U18 team, then later in the U20 team, for which he played until the 2011/12 season. In the course of the 2011/12 season , the defender also celebrated his professional debut after he was loaned to his regular club in Benátky nad Jizerou and came to the team in the second-rate first division .
At the beginning of the 2012/13 game year , the 20-year-old switched completely to the professional field. In the course of the following three seasons, the defensive player was both in the Extraliga squad of Bílí Tygři Liberec and on loan in that of HC Benátky nad Jizerou. After mainly playing time there in the first year, he was almost a regular player in Liberecs in the 2014/15 season . In the 2015/16 season , Šimek played a key role in ensuring that Liberec finished the main round as the team with the highest points and was able to celebrate winning the Czech championship at the end of the playoffs . The defender was named the most valuable player in the playoffs. In the following game year, the White Tigers with Šimek again advanced to the final, but failed there at HC Kometa Brno .
After these successes and Šimek's achievements in the league, he was signed by the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League in May 2017 , who secured the services of the undrafted free agent for one year. In the 2017/18 season , the Sharks used the Czech in their farm team , the San Jose Barracuda , in the American Hockey League . After he had scored 27 scorer points in 71 missions over the course of the season , the franchise extended the expiring contract early by two years at the end of April 2018. For the 2018/19 game year , the Czech finally made the leap into the NHL squad San Joses, where he established himself as a regular player after his debut from December 2018. In March 2019, however, the defender seriously injured his right knee and fell out with a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament and inner ligament . By this time he had completed 41 season games.
International
Šimek made his debut for his home country as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2015/16 . As a result, the defender played with the Czech national team at the 2016 World Cup in Russia and 2017 in Germany and France , where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
