The Chief Minister is the highest ministerial office in Sierra Leone .

As chief minister, the chief minister presides over all other ministers and has a special role as a link with the president . Since the role of the head of government in Sierra Leone is not separate from that of the state president, the position of prime minister as head of government is not envisaged. The appointment of the Chief Minister theoretically creates an office similar to that of the Prime Minister.

The appointment of a chief minister in the Bio II cabinet led to controversy . The distinction between the Vice President and the Chief of Staff ( those primarily responsible for staff) was unclear . The only Chief Minister previously was Milton Margai as Chief Minister of the British Protectorate of Sierra Leone between 1954 and 1958 .
