Marcus Tapio Sörensen (born April 7, 1992 in Södertälje ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since May 2016 and plays for them in the position of right winger .
Career
Sörensen learned to play ice hockey in the youth department of IK Tälje , a club from his hometown Södertälje . Then he was active in the youth of the Elitserien club Södertälje SK until summer 2010 . For this he went through all teams up to the U20 selection, which was active in the J20 SuperElit , the highest Swedish league of this age group. Following the 2009/10 season, the 18-year-old was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in 106th place by the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League .
But instead of joining the Senators and moving to the North American continent, Sörensen signed a contract with the capital club Djurgårdens IF , for which he went on the ice in the 2010/11 season . The striker played for both the U20 team in the J20 SuperElit and the first team for which he made his professional debut in the Elitserien. After just one season, the paths between club and player parted again and the attacker switched to Skellefteå AIK in summer 2011 . He found it difficult to gain a foothold there. On the one hand, Sörensen was unable to improve qualitatively in the junior division, on the other hand, the competition in the squad of the ambitious Elitserien team was too great to guarantee him sufficient time. After eight appearances with the A-Juniors and one game for the men's team, the management loaned the winger to Borås HC from the second-class Allsvenskan , where he was able to gain experience in the senior division.
In terms of sport, the season in Borås was extremely disappointing, as the team managed to stay in the league at the last moment, but did not receive a license afterwards and had to make the way to the third division. Sörensen appeared in 29 games for the club and collected 17 scorer points , making him statistically one of the most effective offensive forces. After the season he left both Borås, as the loan deal ran out, and Skellefteå and returned to Djurgårdens IF. The club was relegated from the Elitserien in the preseason and joined the Allsvenskan in the 2012/13 season with the aim of returning directly to the top division. Although the team was supported in the course of the season by partially seasoned staff from the NHL affected by the lockout , the striker fought for a regular place and was among the five best scorers of the team with 23 scorer points in twice as many games. But the team missed the promotion. Djurgården only returned to the House of Lords at the end of the 2013/14 season . As the team-internal top scorer of the promotion round, Sörensen played a decisive role.
Back in the House of Lords, the striker improved his game again. As a rookie , he recorded 32 scorer points in 50 matches, making him the best point collector of his team and at the end of the season he was named Rookie of the Year for the Svenska Hockeyligan . After another positive 2015/16 season , in which he was able to increase his point record to 34, Sörensen left the club. The achievements of the now 24-year-old in the past three years had drawn the attention of the National Hockey League franchises to him again. Since the Ottawa Senators' transfer rights had already expired in the summer of 2012 - an agreement between the two parties had not been reached - the striker was able to negotiate freely with all teams as a free agent . Ultimately, the San Jose Sharks secured the service of the Swede initially for the following year and at the beginning of the season they put him in their farm team , the San Jose Barracuda , in the American Hockey League . After initial problems, Sörensen quickly acclimated himself and contributed 27 scorer points in 39 games for the Barracuda by the beginning of February 2017. He was then called up for the first time in the NHL squad San Joses and made his debut there. In the following season, the Swede commuted between the NHl and AHL squads of both teams before establishing himself with the San Jose Sharks at the beginning of the 2018/19 season . In January 2019, his expiring contract was prematurely extended by two years.
International
After Sörensen had only played a few test matches for the Swedish junior national teams in the U18 and U20 junior division, he made his debut for the Swedish men's national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2014/15 . He also completed other assignments as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2015/16 for the Tre Kronor .
