Thermal exhaust gas cleaning

Exhaust gas cleaning processes are named as thermal exhaust gas cleaning in which organic exhaust gas constituents are thermally oxidized . Depending on the composition of the exhaust gas, these processes can do without additional fuel. In some publications, thermal post-combustion is referred to as thermal exhaust gas cleaning.

Basics

Oxidative processes can convert pollutants in the air , which consist exclusively of the elements carbon , oxygen and hydrogen , into the compounds carbon dioxide and water, which are largely harmless from the point of view of immission control . There are three methods to choose from in practice:

These processes differ in particular in terms of the combustion temperatures . The legal requirements and the safety concept of the plant are decisive for the process selection. In the case of flame combustion, no heat is normally used.

All processes have in common that a complete oxidation of the hydrocarbons contained in the exhaust gas is sought. This is usually done through the three steps

  • Preparation of the reaction partners,
  • Mixing the reactants and
  • Ignition / reaction.

The reactants are the reactive components of the exhaust gas and, if necessary, additional fuel or combustion air. If other reaction products than carbon dioxide and water arise during thermal exhaust gas cleaning, these must be removed by means of suitable exhaust gas cleaning processes (e.g. gas scrubbing when hydrogen chloride occurs ).
