Mario Ferraro (born September 17, 1998 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL) since April 2019, where he plays the position of defender .

Career

Ferraro, who was born in the Canadian metropolis of Toronto in the province of Ontario , but grew up in King City , about 30 kilometers away , played in Ontario's lower-class junior leagues around Toronto until the summer of 2016. Between 2014 and 2016, the defender was active for the Toronto Patriots in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). In his first year with the team, Ferraro won the league championship with the team. The second year in which the team missed the qualification for the playoffs and thus the title defense, he found himself after 40 scorer points in 51 games in the Second All-Prospect Team of the OJHL.

Although Ferraro had already been selected by the Barrie Colts in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League in 2014 , the defender decided to switch to the United States Hockey League in the summer of 2016 . In their entry draft , he was drawn by the Des Moines Buccaneers in the previous summer , for whom he went on the ice for one game year in the 2016/17 season. Once again, the defensive player collected over 40 points and at the end of the year was in both the All-Rookie Team and the First All-Star Team of the league. As a result, he was selected in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft 2017 in 49th place by the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL). Ferraro then enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst , where he spent the next two years parallel to his studies for the university team Minutemen in the Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). After Ferraro made it into the Hockey East all-rookie team at the end of the 2017/18 season, he won the division's regular season title in 2019 . He was also part of the Third All-Star Team. By signing an NHL entry contract with the San Jose Sharks in April 2019, his college career ended prematurely with the entry into professionalism.

In the summer that followed, Ferraro earned a place in the Sharks' regular squad and made his debut in the NHL as one of three rookies at the start of the 2019/20 season .
