The Old Bridge is a bridge in the Scottish town of Musselburgh in the East Lothian Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. A former classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 1998.

history

The Old Bridge was likely built in the early 16th century. It is possible that there was a previous bridge at the site, which was destroyed by English troops in 1548. The construction is attributed to George Seton, 6th Lord Seton , who died in 1549, so that his widow Jane may also have been involved. The description of a previous structure harmonizes with an observation during repair work in 1809. An older substructure was described on the inside. The bridge was frequently repaired, including 1597, 1625 and 1639. In the middle of the 19th century, the access ramps were leveled and replaced by stairs, so that the bridge has been reserved for pedestrians ever since.

description

The 76 m long and 4.3 m wide masonry viaduct is located in the center of Musselburgh. It spans the Esk with three segment arches with spans of 15.5 m and a clearance height of 3.4 m. There was a layer masonry with brick-lined arches used. The pillars are equipped with triangular protruding icebreakers . The bridge has architectural parallels with the Nungate Bridge in Haddington .
