The Geisterspitze ( Italian Punta degli Spiriti ) is a 3467 m slm high peak in the Ortler Alps .
Location and surroundings
The Geisterspitze rises around 3.6 km south of the Stilfser Joch as a summit just in front of the crystal ridge. Its glaciated north side is made accessible by a ski area. The nearest peaks in the Kristallkamm , which passes south, include (from west to east) the Hohe Schneide ( 3434 m ), the Payerspitze ( 3446 m ) and the Tuckettspitze ( 3462 m ). Like all the mountains mentioned, the Geisterspitze lies in the Stilfserjoch National Park .
Surname
The name of the mountain appears for the first time around 1900 in the spelling Geister Spitzen on Austrian military maps. Folk etymologically , the name is associated with the story of an unredeemed soul of a shepherd. Egon Kühebacher traces the name back to a Rhaeto-Romanic craista with the meaning "mountain ridge", with reference to the dialectal sound .
Alpinism
The Geisterspitze is a much-visited and, thanks to its location on the Stilfser Joch, easily accessible summit. It is particularly popular with ski tourers .
