Guenrouet ( Gwenred in Breton ) is a French commune with 3,349 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Loire-Atlantique department , in the Pays de la Loire region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Nazaire and the canton of Pontchâteau (until 2015: canton of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois ).
geography
Guenrouet, sometimes also written Guenrouët, is located on the left bank of the Isac River , which forms part of the Canal de Nantes à Brest here. Today the canal is only used for tourist purposes. The community has built a spacious leisure facility on the riverbank, which also includes a marina for sport boats and houseboats .
history
- Guenrouet is the Earl of Vannes , I. Alain , the Great , founded in the 9th century.
- During the French Revolution , Guenrouët hosted a revolutionary force in the rectory. But the population is hostile to the civil constitution of the clergy and hides unruly priests.
- The construction of the Canal de Nantes à Brest under the July monarchy favored the municipality's economic development.
