Drefféac is a French commune with 2,228 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Nazaire and the canton of Pontchâteau (until 2015: canton of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois ).

geography

Drefféac is 22 kilometers south of Redon . The surrounding municipalities are Saint-Gildas-des-Bois , Sainte-Anne-sur-Brivet and Pontchâteau .

Origin of name

The name Drefféac is probably derived from the Breton dref - oak, with the Latin suffix -acum , which denotes possession.

history

In the Middle Ages, the community was part of the fiefdom of the Barons of La Roche-Bernard . Drefféac was administered by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois until 1614 . In 1714 the place was destroyed by a devastating fire. Until the end of the 18th century, the area was partially covered by the forest of Perche and peat bogs , which were cultivated in the early 1770s. During the revolution , in contrast to the vast majority of the canton, the village tended to be on the Republican side. The pastor of Drefféac, Nicolas Pichon, resigned his priesthood and became a constitutional priest and later mayor of Drefféac. Since 1862 the place has had a train station on the Savenay – Landerneau railway line , which has since been reduced to a stop.

languages

The Breton was spoken until the 12th century. 39% of the family names are of Breton origin. Around the 12th to 15th centuries, the Gallo followed the Breton, probably part of the population was bilingual .
