Savenay is a French municipality with 8679 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Nazaire , to the canton of Blain and was the main town (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of Savenay until 2015.

geography

Savenay is located on the Sillon de Bretagne range of hills . Its surroundings, however, extend into the swamps on the banks of the Loire .

Neighboring municipalities are: Campbon , La Chapelle-Launay , Lavau-sur-Loire , Bouée , Malville and Bouvron .

history

The first mention of Savenay comes from the year 848 and is in the Chartular of Redon ; at that time the place was called Condita Savannacum . In the 13th century, Savenay was added to the La Roche-Bernard fiefdom . In 1435, the indebted Gilles de Rais sold the place to Guillemette , widow of Guillaume le Ferron , and in 1467 Jean de Laval , Baron de la Roche Bernard bought it . From 1547 until the Revolution, Savenay was part of the Donges Vice- County . In 1800 Savenay became a sub-prefecture , but in 1868 it lost its status to Saint-Nazaire .
