Bridge over the river Vilaine, next to it the remains of the old bridge

La Roche-Bernard is a French commune in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . It has 692 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is 38 m above sea level, high above the Vilaine River , about ten kilometers before it reaches the sea.

history

The place was founded by the Normans in 919 . In the winding old town you can still find buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries around the town hall . On a ledge in front of the site are two cannons that are reminiscent of a warship that sank in a naval battle with England in 1759 .

La Roche-Bernard is the gateway to Brittany . The river Vilaine is spanned here by a suspension bridge that was inaugurated in 1960. It replaced the old suspension bridge from 1911, which was destroyed in 1944. The remains of the two ramps can still be seen next to the new bridge. A stretch of the Chemins de fer du Morbihan also crossed the 1911 bridge .
