The Vilaine in Rennes |
The Vilaine is a coastal river in France that runs through the Pays de la Loire and Bretagne regions. It has its source in the municipality of Juvigné . The Vilaine crosses the departments of Mayenne , Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan and after 218 kilometers flows into the Atlantic Ocean as an estuary near Arzal , on the south coast of Brittany .

The Vilaine is navigable from its mouth to Rennes (131 km, 14 locks). In Rennes it is connected to the Canal d'Ille-et-Rance , which leads to the north coast of Brittany and flows into the Atlantic at Saint-Malo . At Redon , the Vilaine forms a waterway junction with the Canal de Nantes à Brest .
