The Saint-Pierre church in Sulniac

Sulniac ( Breton Sulnieg ) is a French municipality with 3,674 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .

geography

Sulniac is located about 15 kilometers east of Vannes in the interior of the department.

history

There is little evidence of the early history of the community. The existence of Sulniac is first mentioned in 1160, when a document lists a parish Suluniac. The Templars (Johanniter) ruled the area for a long time. After the French Revolution, the area was devastated by skirmishes between French government troops and supporters of the Chouannerie . In 1870, the place La Vraie-Croix split from Sulniac.

Population development

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the population remained stable at a high level. This is in contrast to many other Breton communities. It only declined between 1911 and 1954, when the number of residents fell from 1,433 to just 1,062. This development changed afterwards and the population has been increasing since 1968 because of Sulniac's proximity to Vannes.
