Férel ( Breton Ferel ) is a French municipality with 3,220 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .
geography
Férel is located on the left bank of the Vilaine , which forms the northern municipal boundary. About 30 kilometers south is the city of Saint-Nazaire . The municipality is in the southeast of the Morbihans department on the border with the Loire-Atlantique department .
history
There is little evidence of the history of the community. The first church was built by the monks of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois. Probably in the 12th century. The small town belonged to the parish of Herbignac until 1749. After the French Revolution, there were revolts against the new rulers in Paris. In 1793 the parish priest was murdered and the mayor François Chatal was beheaded on September 5th in La Roche-Bernard. From 1793 to 1801 Férel belonged to the canton of Camoel, then until 2015 to the canton of La Roche-Bernard .
Population development
During the entire period between 1793 and 1841, the population remained stable at around 1,400. This was followed by half a century of population growth to around 2000 people. In the twenty years that followed, the number of residents remained at this level. A decline only took place between 1911 and 1962 (1911–1962: −24%). This development changed afterwards and the population increased again between 1975 and 1990 and reached earlier values. After stagnating in the 1990s, the population has grown rapidly since then (1999–2012: +51%).
