Guer is a French town with 6192 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . The Breton name of the municipality is Gwer-Porc'hoed .

geography

Guer is 41 kilometers southwest of Rennes and seven kilometers north of the Forêt de la Bourdonnaie (Forest of Bourdonnaie). The Aff and Oyon rivers cross the municipal area. The city is located at the intersection of the D772 and D773 département roads.

history

In Gallo-Roman times, Guer was at the crossroads of important Roman roads . One road ran from Angers ( Juliomagus ) to Carhaix ( Vorgium ), one from Rieux ( Duretia ) to Corseul ( Fanum Martis ) and one from Vannes ( Dariorigum ) to Rennes ( Condate ).

Guer is mentioned for the first time in the 9th century as Plebs Wern . Wern or vern is the Gallic word for " alder forest " ( French: aulnaie).

Part of the village is the village Coëtquidan in which since 1945 the Military School of Saint-Cyr is located.

Town twinning

There is a city partnership with the Italian city ​​of Gravedona .

  • In the hamlet of La Ville Boscher , which belongs to Guer, there is a gallery grave from prehistoric times, which is also made of slate.
  • The Chomet de Coëplan is a menhir in the forest west of Guer.
  • The Saint-Etienne chapel dates from the Carolingian era and was built with materials and perhaps on foundations from the Gallo-Roman period. One of its windows was enlarged in 1631. The building is dated to the 9th century and has been classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) since 1971 .

Museums

The Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan Memorial Museum ( Musée du Souvenir des écoles militaires de Saint-Cyr-Coëtquidan ) in the Saint-Cyr Military School shows collections that document the history of officers from the end of the Ancien Regime to our days.

The Agricultural Machinery Museum ( Musée Agri-Auto ) is located in Guer town center. It shows over 500 machines and tools as well as 15 vehicles that document the history of agriculture from 1850 to the present day. It is open on Sundays from May to November.

economy

Important occupations of the Guérois are the breeding of cattle, pigs, horses and mink . There is a cider that can also be visited. Guer had a train station on the former Châteaubriant – Ploërmel line .
