The source of the Frémur river is located in the municipality .
history
In Celtic times Corseul was the main town of the Celtic tribe of the Curiosolites , from which the name of the city is derived. 10 BC The city was re-founded as Civitas , the Roman name was probably Fanum Martis ( Latin for "Temple of Mars ").
Fanum Martis was located in the Roman province of Lugdunensis and was for a long time an important Gallic-Roman city, in which five Roman roads ended. The heyday of Corseul can be set in the second half of the 1st century AD. From the 4th century AD began the decline of the settlement, which finally lost its central importance to Alet. Presumably the Roman Corseul was set on fire by invading barbarians around the year 406 AD and thereby completely destroyed. These events may be connected to the Rhine crossing in 406 .
A dedicatory inscription for the goddess Đirona was discovered in Corseul ( CIL = XIII, 03143AE 1999, 01071 Num (ini) Aug (usti) de (ae) / Dirona (e) Cani (a) / Magusia lib (erta) / v ( otum) s (olvit) l (ibens) m (erito) ). Many of the remains of Roman architecture were looted in the following centuries, only a few fragments were collected in the garden of the town hall. The temple of Mars in Haut-Bécherel near Corseul is also of archaeological importance .
