Caulnes ( Breton Kaon ; Gallo Cawn ) is a municipality with 2,488 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in France . It is located in the Brittany region and in the Côtes-d'Armor department and in the Broons canton , which is part of the Dinan arrondissement . The inhabitants are called Caulnais or Caulnaises.

geography

The municipality is located 20 kilometers southwest of the city of Dinan . The Rance and its tributary Frémeur flow through the municipality .

history

Since remains of Gallo-Roman thermal baths from the 4th century have been found in the municipality, the area must have been settled very early.

The municipality belonged to the Broons district from 1793 to 1801 and was the capital of the Caulnes canton. In 1801 the district was dissolved and Caulnes was replaced by Saint-Jouan-de-l'Isle as the canton's capital. Since December 1881 Caulnes has been the capital of the canton again.

Infrastructure

The place is located at a crossroads from north to south (the D 766 from Dinan to Vannes) and west to east (the national road 12 from Brest-Saint-Brieuc to Rennes).

The rail link from Brest to Paris runs through the municipality. The community is also connected to the public transport network by the bus route from Montauban to Dinan. There is a regionally important agricultural school in Caulnes.
