Ploërmel – La Brohinière railway line to La Brohinière

The Châteaubriant – Ploërmel line was a French standard-gauge railway that connected Châteaubriant in the Loire-Atlantique department with Ploërmel in the Morbihan department . The route was single-track and not electrified, today it is mostly a cycle path (Voie Verte) . It consisted of two sections; the east led from Châteaubriant via Rougé and Bain-de-Bretagne to north of Messac (Ille-et-Vilaine) , the west from Messac - Guipry station via Maure-de-Bretagne to Ploërmel. In between, the older Rennes – Redon railway line, which still existed in 2015, was used for around three kilometers . In Guer , the Saint-Cyr Military School training center and the military training areas there were connected.

history

A rail connection between Châteaubriant and Ploërmel, over or near Bain and Messac, was included as number 66 in the Freycinet plan of July 17, 1879. Exactly four years later, the concession agreement for a number of routes, including this one, was signed with the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Ouest (Ouest) and confirmed by law on November 20, 1883.

The eastern section was put into operation on August 9, 1896. The part from Messac to Ploërmel followed on April 5, 1903.

Passenger traffic ended between Châteaubriant and Messac on October 2, 1938, and on March 6, 1939 on the branch to Ploërmel.

Freight traffic also disappeared in steps. The section from La Thébaudais to the junction at Messac was closed on November 12, 1954. On October 19, 1967, Guer – Ploërmel followed. Between Thébaudais and Rougé was on October 29, 1970. The western remainder to Guer lasted until December 9, 1992, between Chateaubriant and Rougé, and thus on the last part of the route, the train finally left on July 18, 2000.

traces

The Châteaubriant station and the Rennes – Redon railway line, including the shared section and the Messac - Guipry station, are still in operation (as of November 2015).

The remaining tracks have been completely dismantled, a large part of the route has become a cycle path and can still be recognized as a former railway line with dams, cuts and wide curves. The largest engineering structure on the route, the bridge over the Vilaine near Guipry, has also been preserved as part of the cycle path.

The Bain-de-Bretagne train station is now a residential building, there is still a platform house on the way. The Guer train station is now a tourist information office, the preserved water tower there carries the fire siren. The reception buildings in Porcaro and Augan are also privately owned. The Ploërmel station houses a vocational school for craftsmen.
