The Châteaubriant – Rennes railway is a single-track French railway that connects the Châteaubriant station with the Rennes station. It leads from the Loire-Atlantique department to the Ille-et-Vilaine department and is primarily used for regional traffic approaching Rennes . At SNCF Réseau it is number 466 000.

history

Rennes had already been reached by the Paris – Brest railway in 1857 , and Châteaubriant was connected to the Nantes – Châteaubriant railway in 1877 and the eastern part of the Sablé – Montoir-de-Bretagne railway .

Public interest in this railway line was established in a law of April 3, 1878. No concession was granted to a private railway company, but in 1879 the ministre des travaux publics (building ministry) was commissioned to build the line at state expense.

It was opened by the state on December 28, 1881. In 1883 it was handed over to the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Ouest , which already operated Paris – Rennes – Brest and several lines branching off from it, as well as Sablé – Montoir-de-Bretagne, including the Châteaubriant station.

At the end of 1908, the route was given up again and bought by the Chemins de fer de l'État .

From its foundation on January 1, 1938, it belonged to SNCF , today (2017) to its infrastructure subsidiary SNCF Réseau .

In July 2016, the top speed had to be reduced to 40 km / h due to route damage.

Route description

Janzé station

The route leaves Châteaubriant in a northerly, slightly northeastern direction. Behind the former train station in Noyal-sur-Brutz , it crosses the Brutz and changes to the Ille-et-Vilaine department and thus to what is now the region of Brittany . Around Martigné-Ferchaud it changes to a north-westerly direction. A branch line branched off here to Vitré , today there is only one stopping point. The route continues via Retiers and Janzé . From Corps-Nuds , it runs north again. The urban area of Rennes is reached in La Poterie , but the stop is about 1 km from the endpoint of the Rennes Metro of the same name . In a left curve, it approaches the route from Paris and reaches Rennes train station from the east.

The route is mediocre, with slopes of 15 ‰ on longer sections. The curve radii go down to 500 m.

There are connections for freight traffic at Vern-sur-Seiche and Retiers .

traffic

The railcar from Rennes (right) has a connection to the “Tram-Train” to Nantes in Châteaubriant

The operation is very much thinned out in the spring timetable 2017. Mondays to Fridays, five trips leave Rennes in this direction, two each end in Janzé and Retiers, only one drives the entire route. There are three trains on Saturdays and two trains on Sundays, but they run along the entire route. The travel time is 1 hour 25 for the entire journey.
