Messac ( Breton : Mezeg ; Gallo : Meczac ) is a town and commune Déléguée in the French municipality Guipry-Messac with 3,163 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany . The inhabitants are called Messacois .
geography
Messac is located about 32 kilometers south-southwest of Rennes on the eastern bank of the Vilaine River . Messac is surrounded by the neighboring towns of Saint-Malo-de-Phily in the north, Pléchâtel in the northeast, Bain-de-Bretagne in the east, La Noë-Blanche in the east and southeast, Sainte-Anne-sur-Vilaine in the south, Langon in the southwest as well as Guipry to the west. The former route nationale 772 runs through the municipality . The place has a station "Messac-Guipry" on the Rennes-Redon railway line .
history
In 843, when Messac was still known as Metiacus , Lambert II of Nantes and his allies, the Viking prince Hasting and the Breton prince Nominoë, fought Renaud of Herbauges in the Battle of Messac , which Renaud won. The subsequent fight at Blain ended fatally for Renaud and successful for Lambert II. In the 13th century there was a commandant's office for the Knights Templar, which is still visible today as a building.
The municipality of Messac was merged with Guipry to form the Commune nouvelle Guipry-Messac with effect from January 1, 2016 . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Redon and was part of the canton of Redon (until 2015: canton of Bain-de-Bretagne ).
