history
The current name is derived from a pine forest that was planted during the reign of Philip II . The previous name was likely Saint-Gildas-des-Marais. Like the neighboring communities in the hinterland of Saint-Nazaire , Saint-Gildas-des-Bois was part of the fortress of Saint-Nazaire during the German occupation of France . As a result, the place was only liberated on May 11, 1945 after the fortress surrendered.
