The Canton Machecoul (Breton Canton Machikoul ) is a French canton in the arrondissement Nantes and Saint-Nazaire , in the Loire-Atlantique and the region Pays de la Loire ; its main town is Machecoul .
history
The canton was established in 1790. From 1790 to 2015 six municipalities belonged to the canton of Machecoul. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of communes rose to 15. In addition to the previous six communes, 5 of the 8 communes of the previous canton of Le Pellerin and 4 of the 6 communes of the previous canton of Bourgneuf-en-Retz were added.

The old canton of Machecoul comprised six municipalities over an area of 200.61 km². These were: La Marne , Machecoul (main town), Paulx , Saint-Étienne-de-Mer-Morte , Saint-Mars-de-Coutais and Saint-Même-le-Tenu . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 4418.

- Fusion of Arthon-en-Retz (canton Pornic) and Chéméré → Chaumes-en-Retz
- Fusion of Machecoul and Saint-Même-le-Tenu → Machecoul-Saint-Même
- Merger of Bourgneuf-en-Retz and Fresnay-en-Retz → Villeneuve-en-Retz

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the three voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the pairing Jean Charrier / Karine Fouquet (both DVG) won against Jean-Raymond Audion / Fabienne Merceron (both Union de la Droite) with a share of the vote of 55.16% (turnout: 49.13% ).
