The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. The residents used to belong to the Rezé canton .

The canton is located in the southern half of the Loire-Atlantique department.

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the six voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Samuel Landier / Malika Tararbit (both PS) won against Brigitte Dousset / Antoine Gautier (both Union de la Droite) with 63.89% of the vote (turnout: 44.58%).
