The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. The residents previously belonged to the cantons of Orvault (Orvault) and Saint-Herblain-Est (parts of the city of Saint-Herblain).

The canton is located in the southern half of the Loire-Atlantique department north of the Loire on the western city limits of Nantes .

In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Bernard Gagnet / Marie-Paule Gaillochet (both PS) won against Matthieu Annereau / Monique Maisonneuve (both Union de la Droite) with 51.63% of the vote (turnout: 48.25%) ).
