The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. The residents used to belong to the cantons of Saint-Nazaire-Ouest and Saint-Nazaire-Center .

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the seven voting couples achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the team Bertrand Choubrac / Annaïg Cotonnec (both PS) won against Florence Beuvelet / Philippe Cadiet (both Union de la Droite) with a share of the vote of 60.31% (turnout: 44.3%).
