The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. The residents previously belonged to the cantons of Montoir-de-Bretagne (all 4 municipalities of the previous canton), Pontchâteau (Besné), Saint-Nazaire-Est and Saint-Nazaire-Center (eastern part of the city of Saint-Nazaire).

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the seven voting couples achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Philippe Grosvalet / Lydia Meignen (both PS) won against Jean-Claude Blanchard / Lydia Poirier (both FN ) with a share of the vote of 68.32% (voter turnout: 45.15%).
