The canton Châteaubriant (Breton Castello-Briant ) is a French canton in the Arrondissement Châteaubriant-Ancenis in the Loire-Atlantique and the region Pays de la Loire ; its main town is Châteaubriant .

history

The canton was established in 1790. From 1790 to 2015, four municipalities belonged to the canton of Châteaubriant. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of communes rose to 19. In addition to the four previous communes, all communes of the previous cantons Moisdon-la-Rivière , Rougé and Saint-Julien-de-Vouvantes were added.

The old canton of Châteaubriant comprised four municipalities on an area of ​​168.63 km². These were: Châteaubriant (main town), Ruffigné , Saint-Aubin-des-Châteaux and Soudan . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 4408.

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the three voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Catherine Ciron / Bernard Douaud (both Union de la Droite) won against Quiterie De Coniac / Jean-Michel Duclos (both DVG ) with 63.79% of the vote (turnout: 49.3%) %).
