Machecoul ( Gallo machecoul , Breton Machikoul ) is a former French commune with last 6,076 inhabitants (2013) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire . It is located in the countryside of the Pays de Retz on the banks of the Falleron River .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the municipalities of Machecoul and Saint-Même-le-Tenu were merged into a Commune nouvelle with the name Machecoul-Saint-Même .

history

Machecoul belonged to the Lords of Rays (Retz).

In 1055, Harscoët I de Rays built the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, which became the Sainte-Croix church.

In 1404 Gilles de Rais was born at Machecoul Castle, where he later tortured and murdered young boys.

From March 11, 1793 to April 22, 1793, during the beginning of the uprising in the Vendée , the Machecoul massacres of the royalists of the republicans took place.
