Kalatsch ( Russian Калач ) is a city in the Voronezh Oblast ( Russia ) with 20,046 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the Kalach heights about 300 km southeast of the oblast capital Voronezh at the confluence of the Podgornaya river into the Tulucheyevka , a left tributary of the Don .
Kalatsch is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
The town is the terminus of a 1896 opened 90 km long branch line (now only freight), which at the station Talowaja from the railway Kharkiv - Balashov - Penza branches.
history
The place was founded in 1716 when a small fortress was built here, but it soon lost its military importance. The place name refers to the location of the city on a high river terrace and is a Russian popular name for a narrow river loop around an island or peninsula .
Kalatsch had been an important village since the second half of the 18th century, the inhabitants of which were engaged in the cultivation of sunflowers and pumpkins as well as the cattle trade. Towards the end of the 19th century, the population exceeded that of many cities in the Voronezh governorate .
During the Second World War , Kalatsch was the headquarters of the Southwest Front of the Red Army in the winter of 1942/1943 .
In 1945 city rights were granted.

Culture and sights
A number of buildings from the 18th to early 20th centuries have been preserved in the city. These include the Dormition Church ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja Zerkow) from 1750 (bell tower) having such Assumption Church ( Вознесенская церковь / Wosnessenskaja Zerkow) and the Church of the Resurrection ( Воскресенская церковь / Woskressenskaja Zerkow) from the late 18./frühen 19th Century as well as residential, administrative and industrial buildings.
In Kalach Rajon there are several Kurgane and settlement remains from the Bronze Age .
