List of cities in Russia |
Grjasi ( Russian Грязи ) is a city with 46,807 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and the center of the raion of the same name in the Lipetsk Oblast in Russia . It is located on the Matyra River , a tributary of the Voronezh , about 30 km southeast of the regional capital Lipetsk .
history
The city was founded in 1868, when the railway line was moved from Moscow to Voronezh and a train station was built in what is now the city. The name of the city, which literally means “sludge” - possibly the type of black earth predominant in this region - existed earlier and originally belonged to a village in the vicinity.
As early as 1869, further railway lines to Jelets and Borissoglebsk were built from here , so that Grjasi became a railway junction. At the beginning the place had a little over 1000 inhabitants, by the end of the 1930s there were almost 26,000. At the same time, namely in 1938, Gryazi received city status.
