history
The village of Teschewka , which was first mentioned in a document in 1615, was built in the place of today's town at the beginning of the 17th century . In 1610, not far from the monks Kirill and Gerassim, the monastery of the Icon of Our Lady of Vladimir , or Mother of God Monastery, was founded, to which the village subsequently belonged.
In 1765, under Tsarina Catherine the Great, the land of the monastery and with it the village of Teschewka fell to the state. On September 25, 1779, the place received city rights as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds) under its current name (from Russian sa Donom , for behind the Don ). In 1782 a general development plan for the city was confirmed.
From 1769 until his death in 1783, the former Voronezh bishop Tikhon (secular name Timofei Sokolowski) lived in the Sadonsk monastery. As one of the most influential religious scholars of the 18th century, he was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as Tikhon of Sadonsk in 1861 , after which the monastery with the Tikhon relics developed into an important place of pilgrimage .
In the 1920s the monastery was closed by the Soviet authorities. In 1990 the monastery was returned to the church and the Vladimir Cathedral was re- consecrated .
