Jelez ( Russian Еле́ц ) is a city with 108,404 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Russian Oblast Lipetsk .
geography
Yelets is located on the Bystraya Sosna , a right Don creek, about 80 km west of the regional capital Lipetsk and 350 km south-southeast of Moscow . Closest city is Sadonsk 37 km southeast.
history
Jelez was first mentioned in 1146 as a fortress town. In 1395 and 1414 it was destroyed by the Mongols , after which it remained deserted. In the 17th century, Jelez was repopulated as a trading and administrative town in the fertile black earth region.

Attractions
There are many imposing buildings in the city, including the Assumption Cathedral by the famous Russian architect Konstantin Thon .
Economy and Transport
Today Jelez is a traffic junction and center of the Rajon of the same name . It is located on the Russian M4 highway from Moscow to Novorossiysk . The economy is dominated by agriculture and the processing of its products in mills, leather factories and food-producing companies.
