The French company Eutelsat ( Eu ropean Tel eCommunications Sat ellite Organization ) is the third largest satellite operator in the world.

history

Eutelsat was founded in 1982 as a supranational organization through a government agreement between 26 European countries as the marketer of the ESA communication satellites. The precursor, founded in 1977, was called Interim Eutelsat . Eutelsat now orders and operates its own satellites. Eutelsat is headquartered in Paris . The Spanish company Abertis holds 8.4% of the shares in Eutelsat, the French CDC Infrastructure of France (a subsidiary of Caisse des Depots et Consignations ) 26.15% and the China Investment Corporation (CIC) 7%. The remaining 58.45% are in free float and are traded on Euronext . The first satellites from Eutelsat were the ECS satellites , which were renamed “Eutelsat I” after a successful launch.

Grundig satellite receiver, 1986, for direct reception of Eutelsat communications satellites in Europe

Eutelsat currently operates a fleet of 39 satellites in geostationary orbit and, as of October 2014, transmitted more than 5,800 TV channels to over 200 million satellite and cable households in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The group's satellites also provide fixed and mobile telecommunications services, TV delivery services, corporate networks and broadband services to Internet service providers, transportation, maritime applications and emerging markets. Eutelsat Communications is headquartered in Paris. Together with its subsidiaries, Eutelsat employs more than 780 people in sales, technology and operations from 30 countries.

In Germany, the company owns the Cologne-based Eutelsat Services und Beteiligungen GmbH , which in turn has a stake in Hispasat (Madrid) and Sitcom (Rome) and controls the company's business in the German-speaking market. With KabelKiosk , Eutelsat operates a digital program and service platform for cable networks in Europe.

Reception in Europe

Astra and Eutelsat hot bird satellites in geostationary orbit

For direct reception in Central Europe, the hot bird position 13.0 ° East is particularly important. Programs from almost all European nations are broadcast here. It is possible to receive both Astra at 19.2 ° East and Eutelsat Hot Bird at 13 ° East with cross- eyed LNBs and a permanently installed satellite antenna.

Free-to-air programs in German via Hot Bird

  • Arte (DVB-S2, MPEG-4)
  • Arte HD (DVB-S2, MPEG-4)
  • EuroNews
  • Family TV (DVB-S2, MPEG-4)
  • Koran Hedayah
  • New Jerusalem transmitter
  • SRF info HD (encrypted for sports broadcasts)
  • ZDF (not during and after major sporting events)
  • ZDF neo (only during and after major sporting events)

Some programs:

  • DW Europe (9 a.m. to 12 noon and evening in winter, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in summer)
  • MTA International (identifier: MTA INTL; the identifier MTA International is MTA3)

Special services

Some of the satellites are equipped with special technologies developed by Eutelsat, for example with Skyplex , a multiplex method for satellites.
