Eutelsat W2 is a former communications satellite of the European Telecommunications Satellite Organization ( Eutelsat ) based in Paris.

history

Eutelsat W2 was launched on October 5, 1998 aboard an Ariane 4 rocket from the Center Spatial Guyanais , the spaceport in French Guiana .

In addition to transmitting radio and TV programs, Eutelsat W2 also provided capacities for telecommunications and multimedia services .

On January 27, 2010 the satellite failed unexpectedly and a replacement at 16 ° East has been arranged in the meantime. The transmission to 16 ° East was taken over by EuroBird 16 (formerly Atlantic Bird 4) and Eutelsat W2M , which was never put into operation for commercial services due to damage, and led a shadowy existence on 3.1 ° East. In addition, SESAT 1 was moved from 36 ° East and is the third satellite to 16 ° East. Sesat 1 was replaced by Eutelsat W7 at the traditional position 36 ° East. The replacement satellites are also only in operation to a very limited extent. Sesat 1 has reached the end of its service life, as has the 12-year-old EuroBird 16. The W2M satellite was never put into operation due to damage and is now taking over some tasks at 16 ° East. Thus, three weak satellites with defects were at 16 ° East and compensated for the total failure of the W2, as there were no other replacement options available during this time. Antennas with a diameter of at least 80 cm were necessary to receive the decrepit fleet at 16 ° East. Eutelsat W2 has been moved to a cemetery orbit.

In October 2011, the W2M satellite was replaced by the W3C . In Central Europe you can receive this satellite from a diameter of 60 cm.

On October 29, 2010, Eutelsat suffered a heavy loss. The new satellite with the designation W3B , which was supposed to replace the decrepit satellite at 16 ° East, was lost due to a defect. Thus the previous satellites remained in operation. A new satellite with the designation W3C, which replaces the old fleet, was stationed in space and put into operation in October 2011. Eutelsat W2 has been in a cemetery orbit since then .

reception

The satellite could be received in Europe , the Middle East and parts of Africa , Asia and Russia . The transmission took place in the Ku band .
