Korian is a French company that is active in France , Germany , Italy and Belgium in four core areas: care facilities , rehabilitation centers for the elderly, assisted living and outpatient care services . The company name "Korian" can be traced back to the Japanese word "kokoro", which means "heart" in German.

History of Korian group

Today's Korian Group emerged from the merger of the two French retirement home operators Finagest and Serience in 2003, the aim of which was to establish a reference player in the care sector. Initially the company operated under the name Suren. Since then, the group has grown continuously both through acquisitions and the establishment of new branches.

In 2006, the takeover of Medidep and Korian's IPO were successfully completed. The following year Korian acquired both Segesta, the second largest Italian operator, and Phönix, the tenth largest German operator. With the partial takeover of the German nursing home operator Curanum in 2013, Korian further increased its share in the German market. Later in January 2015, Korian then acquired 100 percent of the shares in Curanum AG.

In March 2014, Korian and Medica shareholders approved the merger and acquisition of Medica by Korian at joint general meetings. This transaction completed the merger of the two companies that began on November 18, 2013.

At the beginning of 2016, the Korian Group announced the takeover of the German nursing home operators Casa Reha, Evergreen, Sentivo and Helvita.

In May 2016, Korian announced the acquisition of Foyer de Lork, a Flemish nursing home and retirement home company with 1,200 beds and a turnover of 70 million euros. With this acquisition, Korian becomes the second largest player in the industry in Belgium with a turnover of 290 million euros.

Today Korian is Europe's leading provider of care and nursing services for the elderly, with a capacity of more than 72,000 residents and patients and around 53,000 employees in France, Germany, Italy and Belgium. The group operates around 715 facilities, including 366 in France, 230 in Germany, 76 in Belgium and 51 in Italy.

Research: Korian Foundation for Aging with Dignity

The “Fondation du Bien Vieillir” (“Foundation for dignified aging”) based in Paris belongs to Korian. Korian set up the foundation to create a greater awareness in society of the challenges of aging. At the same time, aging research should be sustainably supported and promoted. The Korian Foundation for Dignified Aging works together with gerontologists, gerontologists, representatives of interest groups, futurologists and seniors on topics and problems that can be derived from the special needs of older people.

The foundation cooperates with research institutes and universities in the areas of non-drug therapies, aging research and tech innovations. Specialized topics are scientifically deepened and the use of innovative concepts is promoted through scientific studies. The research results are made available to science, stakeholders in the care sector and the interested public. Since 2015, the foundation has published an international study at regular intervals in which the everyday life of seniors (65+) in different European countries is compared. The study also offers a cross-generational comparison of the perception of aging (15 to 64 year olds) and examines different lifestyles and definitions of “feeling at home”.
