Rexel SA , based in Paris, is a French listed wholesale group specializing in the distribution of electrical installation material and components and one of the world's leading companies in the sector. The group of companies, which operates with 2,100 locations in 37 countries, employed around 27,000 people in 2016. Rexel's shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

history

The company was founded in 1967 as Compagnie de Distribution de Matériel Electrique (CDME) and initially only operated in France. From 1980 the CDME began to expand abroad. In 1990 the company was taken over by Pinault (now PPR ) and renamed Rexel in 1993.

In 2005, Rexel was fully acquired by a private equity investor consortium made up of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice , Eurazeo and Merrill Lynch Global Private Equity. With the acquisition of General Electric's sales division , now known as Gexpro, Rexel became the industry leader in North America. In 2007 the investor consortium brought Rexel to the stock exchange through an IPO .

In 2008 the Dutch Hagemeyer Group was taken over .

Presence in Germany

As part of the takeover of Hagemeyer, Rexel Germany was sold to the world's leading French competitor Sonepar in 2008 ; the successor company operates today under the name DEG Deutsche Elektro-Gruppe. Today Rexel is active in Germany through the former Hagemeyer subsidiary, Hagemeyer Germany. In February 2019, Hagemeyer was renamed Rexel Germany .
