Imerys is a French mining company headquartered in Paris . He works in the fields of mining , refractory products, abrasives, additives for paper and plastic, and the manufacture of building materials. Imerys produces kaolinite , perlite , kieselguhr , graphite , corundum and calcium carbonate , among other things .

The company was founded in 1880 by the Rothschild family and for many years had the company name Imétal . At that time the Rothschild family brought together some of their many subsidiaries from the mining sector ( extraction of mineral raw materials) under one roof. From 1961 until his death in 2007, Guy de Rothschild was a member of the board of directors. The seat of his son Édouard de Rothschild (* 1957) until 2005 was taken over by his wife Arielle Malard de Rothschild (* 1963).

In 1994 Imétal took over Lonza G + T with the plants in Bodio , Lac-des-Îles ( Québec ) and Willebroek from Lonza and renamed the company Timcal .

In 1999 the British company English China Clays was acquired and the name of the entire company was changed to Imerys ., In 2000, Treibacher abrasives was taken over as the market leader in corundum production . In 2005 Imerys took over the subsidiary World Minerals from the US company Alleghany Corporation with its subsidiaries Celite and Harborlite.

In 2015 Imerys acquired the business with kaolin for paper coating from BASF and the PCC (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate) division from Solvay, which consists of 4 plants . In July 2017, the refractories group Kerneos was taken over, which merged with the refractories division (Imerys Refractory) to Imerys Aluminate at the beginning of 2018 .

Imerys is 57% owned by Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, which is controlled by Pargesa Holding .
