Bodio ( Lombard Böit ) is a municipality in the Giornico district in the Leventina district in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

It lies at an altitude of 331 m above sea level. M. in the lower Valle Leventina on the road Biasca - Airolo , on the left bank of the Ticino (river) , 5 km northwest of Biasca.

Neighboring communities are Pollegio , Personico , Giornico and Serravalle .

history

In 1227 Bodio was mentioned as Boidi and the local church of Santo Stefano. Together with the settlements of Simbra (or Saimola) above, inhabited in the Middle Ages, the village formed a degagna of the former neighborhood Giornico. During the rule of the cathedral chapter of Milan over the three Ambrosian valleys, the so-called placita donnegalia of the Leventina were held in Bodio in May and November , assemblies that served to pronounce justice and to collect some taxes. Until the 16th century the village belonged to the parish of Giornico. A separate parish Bodio is documented from 1567, until 1602 Pollegio was also part of it. The latter was probably destroyed together with a large part of the village by a landslide in the 15th century. The current church dates from the 19th century. In 1799, Suvorov's Austro-Russian troops built an entrenched camp in the village. Bodio voted in 1814 for the connection of the Leventina to the canton of Ticino.

In the first half of the 19th century, the Ticino River flooded the municipality several times. These natural disasters caused great damage and killed. At the end of the 19th century a great wave of emigration began. About a fifth of Bodio's population at that time emigrated to the United States and settled mainly in California and Nevada . On July 21, 1921, an explosion almost completely destroyed three factories and killed 15 people. The property damage amounted to 6 million.
