Until March 31, 2012, Anzonico was a municipality in the Giornico district , in the Leventina district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .
geography
The village is located on the left slope of the Leventina Valley at 972 m above sea level. M. on the Strada Alta . It has about 100 inhabitants. Together with Calonico , Cavagnago and Sobrio , Anzonico forms the so-called Traversa .
history
The village was first mentioned in 1126 as Ançonego; In 1229 Anzonico is mentioned as Degagna of the neighborhood Giornico , to which the village belonged until the establishment of its own parish in 1602, but which was obliged until 1830 to go to the mother church of San Michele in Giornico for a procession and to consecrate a candle; the 1666 the church, the steeple and numerous houses with stables and all cattle were torn away by an avalanche. 1802 belonged to the ten municipalities of the Leventina, which required the union of the valley with Uri and not with the new canton of Ticino. Vine growing is practiced on the sunny slopes of the municipality (upper limit 700 m above sea level). From 1850 onwards, Anzonico became increasingly depopulated. Numerous Rustici have been converted into holiday apartments.
Community merger
In a referendum in March 2004, the citizens of Anzonico rejected the merger of their municipality with Faido, Osco , Mairengo , Calpiogna , Campello , Rossura , Calonico, Chiggiogna , Cavagnago and Sobrio. On April 1, 2012, Anzonico merged with the municipalities of Calpiogna, Campello, Cavagnago, Chironico , Mairengo and Osco to form the existing municipality of Faido and thus joined the Faido district .

Attractions
The village image is classified in the inventory of protected sites in Switzerland (ISOS) as a site of national importance in Switzerland.
- Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista Decollato, the parish church, consecrated in 1404, was destroyed by an avalanche on January 19, 1667, like a large part of the village (88 dead); it was rebuilt in 1670 in a more protected place.
- Oratory of Sant'Antonio da Padova (1678/1684)
- In the district of Monte Angone: Oratorio Santa Maria Addolorata (1757).
