Rustico (building)

A rustico is a building of traditional construction that is predominant in some areas of the Swiss canton of Ticino .

It is characterized by the use of granite stones as a building material for walls and roofs. The granite stones are sealed with mortar, at least towards the interior. Sometimes the granite spaces are also closed to the outside with mortar, but the natural stone is rarely plastered. The variants are diverse.

Rusticos were traditionally used for agricultural purposes, but today they are the epitome of apartments that are partly luxuriously furnished inside, with masonry that has not been touched on the outside, thus combining tradition and modernity. This change of use attracts all kinds of criticism from landscape conservationists. The usual rental on the gray market without paying tourist tax is also causing controversy. A compulsory payment of the tax directly by Airbnb is being negotiated. In contrast to official overnight accommodation, however, the ticket for local public transport should not be included in the tax.
