The place was first mentioned in 1171 as Faedo . In the spring of 2004, the residents of Faido approved the merger of their municipality with Chiggiogna , Osco , Mairengo , Calpiogna , Campello , Rossura , Calonico , Anzonico , Cavagnago and Sobrio in a referendum. The mountain village of Aldescio at 1550  m above sea level has also been part of the municipality since 2005 . M. on a southern slope above Chiggiogna.

Since most of the municipalities rejected the merger, the new municipality was initially only formed from Faido, Chiggiogna, Rossura and Calonico. On June 5, 2005, the new merger proposal was approved in a referendum and the legally binding merger took place on January 29, 2006.

On April 1, 2012, Faido merged with the municipalities of Anzonico, Calpiogna, Campello, Cavagnago, Chironico , Mairengo and Osco. As a result of the merger, the population increased from 1527 inhabitants (as of the end of 2005, old municipality) to around 3000 inhabitants (new municipality of Faido). On April 10, 2016 Faido merged with Sobrio.

The construction of the national road N2 ( Autobahn 2 (Switzerland) ) presented the community with a practical test, because the official project envisaged an open route between the village center and the hospital . Supported by Robert Steiner, building advisor to the Swiss Homeland Security and Hans Marti , delegate for urban planning of the city of Zurich, both in the Hürlimann commission , it was possible to obtain a tunnel solution from Federal Councilor Hans-Peter Tschudi . At the opening, Bonvin was made an honorary citizen and Marti was made a guest of honor.
