Faido ( German Pfaid (obsolete), dialect Fait ) is a political municipality and capital of the Faido district and the Leventina district in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .
,geography
The village, capital of the district, is 721 m above sea level. M. on the left bank of the Ticino (river) and on the Airolo - Bellinzona road , a station of the Gotthard Railway , in the Leventina Valley (Livinental). A few years ago it only comprised the valley floor ; in the meantime, however, all the earlier municipalities of the central Leventina valley below the Piottino have merged to the Biaschina .
The neighboring municipalities of Faido are (alphabetically) Acquarossa , Blenio , Dalpe , Giornico , Lavizzara , Quinto TI and Sonogno .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1171 as Faedo . In the spring of 2004, the residents of Faido approved the merger of their municipality with Chiggiogna , Osco , Mairengo , Calpiogna , Campello , Rossura , Calonico , Anzonico , Cavagnago and Sobrio in a referendum. The mountain village of Aldescio at 1550 m above sea level has also been part of the municipality since 2005 . M. on a southern slope above Chiggiogna.
Since most of the municipalities rejected the merger, the new municipality was initially only formed from Faido, Chiggiogna, Rossura and Calonico. On June 5, 2005, the new merger proposal was approved in a referendum and the legally binding merger took place on January 29, 2006.
On April 1, 2012, Faido merged with the municipalities of Anzonico, Calpiogna, Campello, Cavagnago, Chironico , Mairengo and Osco. As a result of the merger, the population increased from 1527 inhabitants (as of the end of 2005, old municipality) to around 3000 inhabitants (new municipality of Faido). On April 10, 2016 Faido merged with Sobrio.

traffic
The construction of the national road N2 ( Autobahn 2 (Switzerland) ) presented the community with a practical test, because the official project envisaged an open route between the village center and the hospital . Supported by Robert Steiner, building advisor to the Swiss Homeland Security and Hans Marti , delegate for urban planning of the city of Zurich, both in the Hürlimann commission , it was possible to obtain a tunnel solution from Federal Councilor Hans-Peter Tschudi . At the opening, Bonvin was made an honorary citizen and Marti was made a guest of honor.

- Faido is mainly characterized by the Gotthard motorway and the nearby Alp transit construction site for the Faido-Polmengo intermediate attack on the Gotthard base tunnel . Faido was the first municipality in Ticino to introduce electric light in 1889.
